Test: sports boots 2011

On the circuit, motorcycle boots with high shaft and toe grinder belong to the compulsory equipment. PS tested eleven sports boots up to 300 euro on their qualities and noted that the price actually plays a role.

bikerbeine live dangerously. According to statistics, the lower limbs affected be taken when 78 percent of all bicycle accidents. It is all the more important to have a proper boot at the foot as sports riders. He should protect the foot from injury, to be affordable and convenient. As well, the most popular brands meet these claims in reality? We wanted to know it and tested 11 different models up to 300 euro on current Super bike on the track.

The models by Berik and FLM are new to the market and were at the time of the test only in size 42 available. The two testers rated the boots in the following criteria: practice driving, practice walking, safety, handling and processing.

In the area of driving, they assessed the hold which sole on the notch, the freedom of movement, the convenience and some other practical aspects. For example, a shoe with a thick front foot fits poorly under the gear lever, a too hard sole watered down the sense of the foot brake. Fortunately, there were no problems in the last two sections. However, a plastic joint that is einhakt on the heel protectors of the Rearset bothered at the hero. Otherwise, the deductions resulting from the fields of freedom of movement and comfort.

Also when walking the convenience for the scoring was in the first place. This category is less relevant as a Touring model in a sports boot and was weighted accordingly low. The squeaking or creaking only some models tended in the field test, but these problems are experience has shown that only gestation period after several weeks.

The most important criterion of a good sports boot is its security. Therefore, this category is also the strongest weight with 15 points. Dr. Christoph Scholl, active for over two decades as race doctor, explains what matters: "the so-called Pro nation injuries in the ankle and lower leg injuries are most common." This tear out Flexions of the foot inside the Strip to the bone and must be operated. "A reinforced foot outdoors may prevent this slippage and is therefore especially important at a sports boot." Heel and ankle should be also strengthened to prevent injuries caused by the sole.

The boot also plays a role: to avoid ankle injury, the shafts about 30 cm high should. The test candidates are (hero) and 32 cm (SIDI) here in the green field with values between 28 cm and reliably protect the pilot's legs.

As motorcyclists slip after a fall on the outside of the boot, the zipper on the inside should be installed. Rear-mounted zippers as in the model of Dainese are although practical, but also not quite sure: you can go up after a fall.
Another security criterion concerns the boot material: synthetic Lorica is very popular due to its robustness and its water-repellent properties. The Microfiber grinds but much faster by than leather.

Overall, the security level of the test candidates is very high: heels and ankles are reliably protected by thick Kunststoffapplikationen on almost all models. However, it is at joints on the inner ankle as in the model of held the risk that the boots during the fall to latch hook. Toes and Shin are well-protected at all tested boots.

In the handling of the test candidates are different. This criterion include and remove, and change the cutter. Exemplary model of XPD is here: an Allen key bolt on the toe grinder is enclosed with the delivery the boots. The cutters of Alpinestars are stuck, however, and you can remove only with great effort and install again with even greater force. The model of SIDI interferes with the onion-like entry. Several layers of stiff, sharp cutting edges, plastic and Lorica must be placed one above the other, leading to desert curses and scratched back in the test.

Processing see also significant differences. The models of Dainese and Arlen Ness come due to the particularly noble. Their finely crafted seams, the clean splices and the high-quality appearance make a very good impression.

On the other side of the coin, the models of Gaerne and Firefox can be found. On the Gaerne, especially the cheap-looking bolts on the Firefox disturb the angular, poorly-lit plastic parts and the cheap sole.

All in all the test results matched the expectations of a sports boot: the security level is high, there are little problems with driving, walking, the boots are sometimes quite uncomfortable. The test result suggests that the price of a boot plays a role: with Arlen Ness and the Dainese, two expensive boots are front while the cheap Firefox back lands. If you use mainly on the circuit, you should invest therefore at least 300 euros in the boots.
